Bill which seeks the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps has passed third and final reading

A Bill which seeks the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps has passed third and final reading on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, thereby giving approval for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as an agency under the Ministry of Interior.‎

‎The Bill was passed after the clause by clause ‎considerations of the report of the committee on Interior.

Chairman of Senate committee on Interior, Senator Bayero Nafada from Gombe North, while highlighting the ‎recommendations of the committee, said stated that the legislation would empower, develop and provide alternative employment for youths so as to facilitate peace, community services, nation building and other related matters.

He added that two Hundred and Nineteen (219) of the written memoranda received and most of the oral presentations at the hearing supported the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps while Fourteen (14) supported the establishment of National Unity and Peace Corps.
‎‎
‎As recommended, the Head of the Corps shall be referred to as Commandant-General (CG) with six Deputy Commandant – General (DCGs) and six Assistant Commandant – General (ACGs), drawn from the six geopolitical zones which should reflect the Federal Character principle.‎

‎In his ruling, Senate President, Bukola Saraki maintained that  that the Peace Corps already exists and the Senate is providing it with a stronger framework, saying that Nigerians look forward to efficiency in the use of scarce resources by the Corps to help youth employment.

It would be recalled that the NPC Bill had earlier scaled through Second Reading in both the House and the Senate in the 7th National Assembly but was inconclusive before the 2015 general elections.

The bill is seeking to establish Nigerian Peace Corps in order to initiate and involve the youths in humanitarian services in Nigeria and around the globe.
