Bauchi state commissioner for Budget and Plnning resigns from office, accuses state governor of marginalization


Bauch State Commissioner of Budget and planning, Shehu Barau Ningi, resigned from office yesterday December 22nd. In his resignation letter made public, Ningi cited absence of a good environment to properly function as well as marginalization by the state governor as some of the reasons for his resignation.




Court orders freezing of Ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan’s multiple accounts



Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the freezing of multiple accounts of former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, over allegations of receiving proceeds from fraud. One of the account domiciled with Skye Bank plc has a balance of $5,316.66...


According to Vanguard, the order comes sequel to a further affidavit in support of Ex-parte originating summons sworn to by Abdulahi Tukur, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and filed before the court by EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo requesting the court to urgently direct the managers of the bank accounts contained in the schedule filed with the summons (FHC/L/CS/1343/16) to, in the interim, forfeit the money in the accounts, to prevent further tampering with such.

Also affected by the order are five companies which are Finchley Top Homes Limited, Aribawa Aruera, Magel Resort Limited, AM -PM Global Network Limited Pansy Oil and Gas Limited. Finchley Top Homes Limited is alleged to have fraudulently open account number 1102001996 domiciled with Ecobank Plc and has a current balance of N226,376,700.23 and a fixed deposit with a balance of N1,099,511,484.88.

The company also fraudulently opened other accounts These are account 1771731336, domiciled with Skye Bank and with a current balance of N14,173,848.85; Fidelity Bank account 4011019539 with a current balance of N1,800,494,000; Stanbic Bank account 0016901361 with a current balance of N40,594,12.88; and Diamond Bank account 0019213687 with a current balance of N39,418,712.12.

Aribawa Aruera Reachout Foundation opened account number 1222014221 with Ecobank and has a closing balance of N479,893,431.01, while Magel Resort Limited accounts (4011019546/5250059782) with Fidelity Bank has a subsisting balance of N1,000,494,000. The company also operates two other accounts (1011744356) in Zenith Bank, which has a balance of N858,923,982, and 0024351590 with Diamond Bank and has a balance of N174,166,207.00. AM-PM Global Network Limited opened account number 0026718889 at Diamond Bank and has a balance of N7,213,303.50.

The account opened by Pansy Oil and Gas Limited at Fidelity Bank (4011019577) has a current balance of N1,809,666,494.68, while that at Diamond Bank (0026838491) has a balance of N55,930,024.50. Also affected is one Esther Oba. Esther Oba has a balance of $429,381.87 in her account while the companies collectively havea balances totaling N7,418,829,290.94 (seven billion four hundred and eighteen million eight hundred and twenty nine thousand two hundred and ninety naira ninety four kobo) in six commercial banks.

Esther Oba was found to have opened account number 0019213689 with Diamond Bank and has a current balance of $429,381.87. EFCC said it carried out analyses after receiving an intelligence report, which showed that the accounts ought to be investigated. As such, Mr. Tukur averred that it would serve the course of justice to grant the application for such.




Libyan plane with118 people on board hijacked & diverted to Malta


A Libya internal flight with 118 people on board was hijacked by two people on Friday and diverted to Malta where it landed. The two hijackers had threatened to blow up the Airbus A320, the Times of Malta said. The aircraft had been flying from Sebha in southwest Libya to Tripoli for state-owned Afriqiyah Airways.
The tiny Mediterranean island of Malta is about 500 km (300 miles) north of the Libyan coast.
Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat tweeted: "Informed of potential hijack situation of a #Libya internal flight diverted to #Malta. Security and emergency operations standing by -JM An update said the two hijackers are pro-Gaddafi supporters armed with hand grenades. Their demands are not known yet. Meanwhile, Maltese forces have surrounded the plane after it landed in the country. Negotiation is underway.






Lagos set for bigger, bolder, musical fiesta...Unveils artistes line-up for the eight-day celebration


The Lagos State government has announced its preparedness to host what it calls a better, bigger and bolder edition of the popular One Lagos Fiesta across the five divisional zones of the state, starting from the Christmas eve on Saturday December 24.

In a press release signed on Thursday by the state's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the government said residents and visitors in Ikeja, Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry and Lagos Island will be treated to the best of musical entertainment, cultural displays, comedy and cuisine from the state.

The fiesta, which made its debut in 2015 after the Lagos Countdown was rechristened One Lagos Fiesta and spread across the five divisions of Lagos, will run daily from 12 midday to 12 midnight, with the first six hour dedicated to entertainment for children.

According to the Commissioner, the fiesta is running on the same template like last year's but with three notable additions to make it more impactful this year.





UNIPORT expels 23 students



The Senate of the University of Port Harcourt has approved the expulsion of 23 students for various offences.

UNIPORT Registrar, Dorcas D-Otto, confirmed the expulsion of the students.
The Registrar noted that the “expelled students were found to have engaged in various acts of misconduct, including cultism, assault on lecturers and open threat to law and order in the university.

“Eight of the expelled students were discovered to be members of cult groups; two assaulted a female lecturer and disrupted a congress meeting; while twelve others were former presidents of faculty associations.”


Similarly, the UNIPORT Senate also proscribed a body known as Faculty Presidents Forum for allegedly hijacking the functions of the elected Students’ Union Executive as well as threatening the peace on campus.

The statement also announced the closure of the University of Port Harcourt for the Christmas and New Year holidays with effect from Thursday, 22nd December.

It also indicated that the university would resume for the 2016-2017 Academic Session on 3rd January, 2017.

The Registrar said the decisions were adopted at the 426th Senate meeting of the university, which held on Wednesday, and chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lalle.




Lassa fever: Ogun places 396 persons under surveillance



Ogun state government has said that 396 people that had primary and secondary contacts with the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Idi-Aba in Abeokuta, who died of Lassa fever have been traced and placed under surveillance.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babtunde Ipaye during an official commissioning of Shoremekun Memorial Hospital (Blu at Ifo Local Government, said that the primary contacts were mainly members of the late victim’s family, while the secondary contacts were the victim’s co-workers in the hospital.


He noted that none of the contacts had shown abnormal temperature since they began monitoring them and that the medical officers attached to each of the contacts would continue to monitor until the specified period in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard.


The affected people could be medically adjudged to be free of the disease when they exceed the observation period.

“All the 396 contacts have not shown any abnormal symptoms or signs of Lassa fever.

“Their temperature is under control and we have stationed our monitoring officer with each of the contacts to continue monitoring throughout a specific period in line with the World Health Organisation standard,” Ipaye said.

The Commissioner, who urged members of the public not to panic, advised the people to cultivate high level of hygiene, keep their food away from rats.

He enjoined the public to report any case of malaria symptoms that may have exceeded three days to the nearest General Hospital, the Ministry of Health, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta or call the following dedicated lines; 09099140121 and 09099140122.






'No Chibok girl has been released' - Presidency reacts to online speculations
